Cedar Tree Canopy Raising in Wimberley

Updated August 31, 2026 by Wimberley Tree Service · 3 min read

Cedars get a bad reputation here, and left alone they earn some of it: fast growing, scraggly, low and sprawling. Put a bit of work into them and they change completely.

What canopy raising is

Also called crown lifting. Selective removal of lower limbs to raise the canopy. The point is not to remove branches for the sake of it, but to improve how the tree functions in the landscape.

Lifting the lower canopy creates clearance for walkways, driveways and vehicles, improves visibility across a property, opens views, reduces crowding around structures and fences, increases airflow beneath the canopy, and makes outdoor space feel considerably larger.

Why cedar needs care

Ashe junipers grow aggressively and develop low sweeping branches that take over paths, fence lines and open ground. That does not mean they can be cut hard. Removing too much foliage at once stresses the tree, weakens its structure and leaves it looking unnatural. The aim is to keep the natural form while improving function and clearance.

What it does for a property

Most people do not realize how much low growth affects the feel of a place until it is gone. A raised canopy makes a yard cleaner, more open and easier to maintain, improves access for mowing, walking and parking, and reduces branch interference with roofs and fencing. On cedar in particular it turns an unapproachable mass into trees worth having.

What a canopy lift does and does not do

Crown lifting removes lower limbs to raise the canopy. It creates clearance for walkways, driveways and vehicles, opens sight lines, improves airflow underneath, and makes a property feel considerably larger. What it does not do is improve the health of the tree, so it is worth being clear that this is a functional and aesthetic job rather than a health one.

How much can safely come off

Prune no more than 25% of the canopy in a year, and less on anything already stressed. Removing too much foliage at once weakens the structure and leaves the tree looking unnatural, which is the most common way a canopy lift goes wrong.

Make clean cuts just outside the branch collar so the wound can seal, and avoid removing branches larger than four to six inches in diameter where you have a choice. Sanitize tools between trees.

Do not lift and leave the weight

The classic mistake is raising the canopy while leaving all the weight out at the ends of the upper limbs. That raises the center of gravity and leaves long levers that fail in wind. If the tree is close to a structure, reducing end weight matters more than clearance does.

Timing

Cedar can be worked at any time of year. So can oaks in the same job, provided the canopy cuts are painted promptly and tools are cleaned between trees.
