Cedar & Land Clearing

Fire Mitigation Through Smart Tree Care

Defensible space is one of the most useful protective measures available to a Hill Country property owner, and on most properties here the work is mostly cedar.

Why cedar is the specific problem

Ashe juniper carries fine, volatile fuel continuously from ground level into the canopy. That vertical continuity is the ladder a grass fire needs to become a crown fire. Thinning cedar under and around mature oaks, and raising the canopy on what stays, breaks that ladder.

The part of it we do

Thinning and canopy raising is our work. On a recent job we took dense dead cedar out from beneath and around mature oaks, improved spacing through selective thinning, and chipped everything on site for reuse. The ground is easier to maintain afterwards and it looks better.

Where the standard comes from

How far out to clear, and to what standard, depends on your slope, your structure and local requirements. We do not publish distances for that reason. Texas A&M Forest Service and your local fire department both publish defensible space guidance for Hill Country properties, and that guidance is the specification to work to. If you tell us what it says for your property, we will work to it.

Slope and terrain

Local terrain is rocky limestone and steep slopes, and fire moves considerably faster uphill. Thin soil means clearing a slope completely causes erosion that is harder to fix than the overgrowth was, so the work has to be selective rather than total. That is the main reason a plan drawn for your ground beats a general rule applied to it.

What gets left out of a clearing plan

When we walk a property we point out what a plan usually leaves out. Propane tanks and flammable outbuildings are easy to overlook when the attention is on trees. Driveway and entrance access matters as much, including overhead clearance, because a crew that cannot reach your house cannot defend it. Chipped material spread right up against a wall is the third one.

See cedar clearing and land clearing for how the work is done.
