Wimberley Tree Service is service and tree oriented. The crew came in and completed the work we had previously discussed, taking care to do the trimming to preserve tree health. WTS not only completed the work effectively and efficiently, WTS also offers finishing touches that make this company stand out. My juniper logs were nearly stacked, the chipped tree limbs left in a neat and accessible pile, and my roof, driveway and deck were neat, tidy and blown clean of debris.

I had a good experience here in Dripping Springs with the WTS team. They arrived on time at 8AM sharp, they had the correct tools, they trimmed my BIG storm damaged trees, stacked the firewood, cleaned up and hauled off the debris. They focused on safety and customer satisfaction. I thought the price was reasonable for an all day service, from 8AM to 4PM. I would recommend Santos and his team to anyone. Tree surgery is meant for experts not retired seniors. Visit their website - very informative.

Santos and his crew were amazing. Santos came out and provided us with an estimate after listening to our needs and was able to squeeze us into his busy schedule. The crew was professional and easy to communicate with. During the tree service an empty planter was damaged and we told Santos not to worry about it, it was old and not in use anyway. He was back out at our place the next day with a replacement planter! Santos and his crew are friendly, reliable, honest and Santos is a man of character. We highly recommend them and will use them again. We had five trees trimmed.

Santos Bonilla did fabulous work on a large tree against my glass sun room. I had other services contract on the same work. But Wimberley Tree Service's price was VERY reasonable and he did everything that he told he would do. He was friendly and was ready to work. I have other tree services in the past, but Wimberley Tree Service is the only other tree service I will use in the future. I was amazed at his job. And as today... as I look at the work that he did, I think WTS was very well reasonable & professional.

Oak wilt

How an oak is cut matters more than when

Oak wilt spreads when sap-feeding beetles carry fungal spores from an infected tree to a fresh cut. Those beetles are most active in spring, which is exactly when most people decide to tidy their trees. Every cut we make on an oak gets sealed immediately, whatever the month.

  • Deadwood and hanging limbs over a roof or driveway
  • Low limbs blocking vehicles, gates or ranch entrances
  • Canopy raising for clearance without changing the tree shape
  • Crossing and competing leaders on a young oak
  • Storm-damaged limbs that need cutting back cleanly
  • Clearance work an insurer has asked for before renewal

What you get

Protocol, not just pruning

Safe oak work is a set of habits: sealing wounds straight away, cleaning tools between trees, and disposing of oak debris properly rather than leaving it stacked.

Cost

What oak trimming costs

Oaks are priced like any other trimming job, on canopy size, how much is coming out and how hard the tree is to work. The sealing and the tool cleaning are simply part of how we work on oaks and are not charged as an extra.

If you call us in April about a tree that can safely wait until July, we will tell you that rather than take the booking. If it genuinely cannot wait, for a safety or storm reason, we do the work and seal it immediately.

How oak wilt actually moves

Understanding the two routes explains every precaution we take.

Above ground, small sap-feeding beetles are drawn to fresh wounds on oaks. If they have been on a fungal mat on an infected red oak first, they carry spores straight into that open cut. This is the route you can control completely, by sealing every wound as it is made rather than at the end of the day.

Below ground, live oaks growing near each other commonly fuse roots and share a connected system. Once one tree in a motte is infected the fungus can move tree to tree underground, which is why oak wilt tends to spread outward as a growing patch rather than appearing at random.

How oak wilt actually spreads

Beetle activity peaks in spring, which is exactly when most people feel like tidying their trees. That overlap is the whole problem. Outside that window the risk of a fresh cut being found drops considerably, which is why we schedule oak work for summer through winter wherever the job can wait.

It is not an absolute prohibition. A cracked limb over a bedroom in April gets dealt with in April. What changes is that we seal it within minutes rather than at the end of the day.

What we do on every oak, all year

Paint oak cuts promptly, whatever the season. Clean saws between properties and between trees where there is any doubt. Dispose of oak debris properly rather than leaving it stacked. The fungal mats that move oak wilt above ground form on infected red oak material, so diseased wood in particular should not be left lying around or carried to another property. And if we see something on your trees that looks like oak wilt, we will tell you, and point you to Texas A&M Forest Service for the current guidance and to a company that treats it.

The rules that actually matter for oaks

Sap-feeding beetles are drawn to fresh oak sap. Nitidulid beetles carry the oak wilt fungus from an infected tree to an open wound, and they are most active in spring. An unsealed cut is the opening they need, which is why we never leave one.

Most oak wilt actually spreads underground. Live oaks graft their roots together, and the fungus moves from tree to tree through those connections, which is why it shows up as an expanding patch rather than as scattered single trees. Beetles carrying it to a fresh wound is the other route, and it is the one you can do something about with timing and sealing, but root spread is by far the larger cause.

Every oak cut is painted on the spot. Latex paint or a wound dressing, within minutes rather than at the end of the day. That is the step that closes the opening a beetle would use, and it applies year round, to pruning cuts and to accidental bark damage alike. Tools are cleaned between trees, and oak brush is chipped rather than left stacked where it can form fungal mats.

Paint fresh cuts on oaks straight away with latex paint or a wound dressing. This is the standard recommendation in Texas and the reason is simple: it is the open wound that draws the beetles. It applies to accidental damage as well, so if a mower takes bark off an oak in April, paint it.

Sanitize tools between cuts and between trees. Timely wound sealing and disinfected tools are the two operational practices that matter most, and they are the two most often skipped.

Emergency work is the exception

Emergency pruning can occur at any time of year for hazardous or storm-damaged limbs, provided wounds are sealed straight away. A cracked limb over a bedroom does not wait until July. The rule exists to stop unnecessary wounds, not to leave you with a dangerous tree.

How much to take, and how

Prune no more than 25% of the canopy annually. Avoid removing branches larger than four to six inches in diameter where you have the choice. Make clean cuts just outside the branch collar so the wound can close.

Never top an oak. Topping creates a decaying stub ringed with badly attached regrowth and there is no version of it that is good for the tree.

Why the timing rule exists

Oak wilt has killed millions of oaks in Texas. The fungus is highly destructive and spreads quickly through interconnected oak roots, so an infection started in one garden works outward through a whole neighborhood. Red oaks typically die within four to six weeks of infection.

Following the calendar protects your neighbors trees as much as your own. Our guide to what oak wilt looks like covers identification in full.

Oaks get their own guides, because the timing and the disease risk are specific.

Next steps

What often goes with this job

General canopy work on other species is on the tree trimming page. If an oak is already too far gone, see tree removal. Ongoing condition checks on mature oaks come under tree health and maintenance, and thinning cedar out from under a stand of oaks is cedar clearing.

Questions

Oak trimming and oak wilt questions

Straight answers, including what the work actually costs.

Does the month matter when you trim an oak in Texas?

Beetles that carry oak wilt are most active in spring and are drawn to fresh cuts, so an oak wound left open then carries more risk than the same wound in October. Sealing the cut as it is made removes that difference, which is why we do it on every oak, every month.

Why do you paint the cuts?

A fresh oak wound is attractive to the beetles that carry oak wilt spores. Sealing it immediately, within minutes rather than hours, closes that door. We do it on every oak cut regardless of season.

Do you treat oak wilt?

No. Fungicide injection is a different trade and we do not do it. What we do is the pruning side: immediate sealing, tool hygiene and correct handling of oak wood, so we are not the reason a tree gets infected.

Can I trim an oak in an emergency?

Yes, and sometimes you have to. A cracked limb over a bedroom does not wait. We cut it and seal it straight away.

What do you do with the oak brush?

Chipped on site. Fresh oak wood left in a stack is one of the ways the disease moves, so we do not leave it lying about.

The pruning standards we work to

These are not house rules. They come from Texas A&M Forest Service guidance and the City of Wimberley environmental stewardship recommendations, and they are what any competent crew in this area should be doing.

Timing. The ideal time to trim most general tree species is during the dormant season, when the tree is not spending stored energy on new growth. Wimberley faces severe pressure from oak wilt, a fungal disease that kills oak trees, so on oaks the priority is sealing every cut immediately and cleaning tools between trees. Central Texas trees also experience extended drought periods and sudden freezes, and you avoid heavy pruning when a tree is already carrying that stress.

Tools. A saw that has just been through diseased wood can carry it into the next cut, which is why ours are disinfected between trees. We clean saws between properties as standard.

How much, and how. We work to the accepted standard of no more than about 25% of a mature canopy in a season, and large limbs come off in three cuts so the bark cannot tear. Pruning dead or diseased wood improves structural integrity of trees, and proper crown raising and deadwood removal help trees survive adverse weather conditions.

Afterwards. Debris from pruned or removed trees should be disposed of properly to prevent disease spread. On oaks we dispose of the brush properly. Fungal mats that can start new infections form on infected red oak material, so wood from an oak suspected of oak wilt is handled separately.

Who should do it. Large trees and dangerous limbs need someone who can read where the load runs in damaged wood and rig it down rather than drop it. For anything above head height or over a structure, that judgment is worth paying for. Ask whoever you call what experience they have with the kind of tree you have got.

What to ask before you hire any tree service

Most of the difference between a good outcome and an expensive one is settled before anyone climbs. These are worth checking whoever you hire, including us.

Ask who is assessing the tree. Certified arborists can assess tree health and conditions, and on a borderline tree that judgment is the whole job. If the credential matters to you, ask directly whether the person quoting holds an ISA certification and ask for the number. Plenty of companies imply it without holding it, so it is a fair question to put to anyone. Santos is an ISA Certified Arborist and his number is TX-390690A.

Ask for the insurance certificate, and read it. General liability is what stands behind damage to your property if something goes wrong during the work. Ours is $1,000,000 general liability ($2,000,000 aggregate) through American Builders Insurance Company, and we send it before we start. Ask any company you call to send theirs.

Ask what equipment the job needs. Proper equipment is essential for removing trees in challenging locations, and professional-grade equipment is most of what separates a controlled job from a hopeful one. On a steep or tight Hill Country site the honest answer is sometimes that the job needs kit a particular crew does not own.

Get it in writing. A tree job needs a clear, written estimate detailing all services included: which trees, whether the stump is included, whether wood is hauled or left, whether brush is chipped on site, and the job site clean-up standard.

Check reviews and references. Reviews and references are important for choosing a reliable tree service, and satisfied customers in a place this size are easy to check. Ask for addresses of recent jobs nearby.

Ask about oak wilt protocol. Texas Hill Country tree services follow oak wilt prevention protocols, or they should. That means sealing oak cuts promptly, cleaning saws between properties, and disposing of oak debris properly. Material from an oak suspected of oak wilt is handled separately, because fungal mats form on infected red oak wood.

Tree care services that often come with the job

Very few properties need only one thing done, and handling them on one visit costs less than bringing a crew back.

Health and ongoing care. Proper tree care improves safety and long-term health, and catching a problem early is almost always cheaper than the removal it turns into. Oak wilt treatment requires licensed professionals for effective management, so the useful first step is an honest diagnosis rather than a product.

Trimming and pruning. Tree trimming improves safety and long-term health of trees, and tree pruning helps remove hazardous limbs and improve structure rather than just tidying the outline. Professional tree trimming can improve property appearance and views, and appropriate pruning can reduce some structural risks. Regular inspection and appropriate maintenance can help identify and reduce tree-related risks. Tree trimming services are available for both residential and commercial properties.

Chipping and mulching. Chipping reduces tree debris into manageable mulch on site and converts branches into usable mulch in minutes, and chipping services help clear land for new projects without a convoy of trucks. Chipped material can be reused as mulch for landscaping, mulching improves soil health and moisture retention, which on thin soil over limestone matters more than fertiliser does, and mulch can suppress weed growth in landscaped areas. Two to four inches over the root zone, kept three to six inches clear of the trunk.

Cedar management. Cedar management includes removing dead cedar trees and thinning dense stands, and cedar clearing promotes proper growth in landscapes and of surrounding vegetation by taking the competition for water off your oaks. Cedar management helps maintain healthy landscapes in Texas, is essential for site preparation in construction and for fence lines, and cedar management services are available for residential and commercial properties.

Land clearing. Land clearing removes brush, overgrowth and debris efficiently and can create more usable outdoor spaces on a property that has closed in. It prepares sites for construction projects, driveways and septic fields, can involve cedar removal and site preparation, and involves clearing out unwanted vegetation rather than scraping a slope bare. Land clearing services are available for both residential and commercial properties.

Oak Tree Trimming TX

Wimberley Tree Service is a locally owned tree service company, owner operated, and the same small team does the work on every job. We are based in Wimberley TX and cover Hays County and the surrounding areas, including Dripping Springs, Driftwood, San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Blanco, Bee Cave and Austin, with nearby areas across Comal and Blanco counties served on the same terms.

We work for homeowners, ranch and acreage owners, builders, clients and property managers, on both residential and commercial properties. Whether it is one dead tree in a back yard, dead limbs and branches over a driveway, or a whole fence line that has disappeared into cedar, the process is the same: we come out, look at it, and give you a written price that fits the unique needs of the property.

Every estimate is a free estimate, and we will tell you when we can get out to look. Scheduling the work itself is a separate thing: we run about a month booked out, and we will give you a real date rather than a hopeful one. Emergencies are the exception and are fitted in as soon as the crew can get there. We are $1M liability insured, we take great care to leave the job site clean, and we will tell you when a tree does not need the work you asked about.

A four person crew, and years of Hill Country tree work. The business has run under this name since April 2025. Orlyn and Matt climb, Aurelio works the ground, and Santos comes out on the jobs that need him. That is who turns up: the same small crew every time, not a subcontractor you have never met. Our minimum charge for a job is $500.

You get options, not one number. Every estimate is itemised and normally comes with three to five ways to approach the job, priced separately, so you can see what each part costs and choose the scope yourself. Most people find one of the middle options is the job they actually wanted. We work in English and Spanish.
