Wimberley Tree Service is service and tree oriented. The crew came in and completed the work we had previously discussed, taking care to do the trimming to preserve tree health. WTS not only completed the work effectively and efficiently, WTS also offers finishing touches that make this company stand out. My juniper logs were nearly stacked, the chipped tree limbs left in a neat and accessible pile, and my roof, driveway and deck were neat, tidy and blown clean of debris.

I had a good experience here in Dripping Springs with the WTS team. They arrived on time at 8AM sharp, they had the correct tools, they trimmed my BIG storm damaged trees, stacked the firewood, cleaned up and hauled off the debris. They focused on safety and customer satisfaction. I thought the price was reasonable for an all day service, from 8AM to 4PM. I would recommend Santos and his team to anyone. Tree surgery is meant for experts not retired seniors. Visit their website - very informative.

Santos and his crew were amazing. Santos came out and provided us with an estimate after listening to our needs and was able to squeeze us into his busy schedule. The crew was professional and easy to communicate with. During the tree service an empty planter was damaged and we told Santos not to worry about it, it was old and not in use anyway. He was back out at our place the next day with a replacement planter! Santos and his crew are friendly, reliable, honest and Santos is a man of character. We highly recommend them and will use them again. We had five trees trimmed.

Santos Bonilla did fabulous work on a large tree against my glass sun room. I had other services contract on the same work. But Wimberley Tree Service's price was VERY reasonable and he did everything that he told he would do. He was friendly and was ready to work. I have other tree services in the past, but Wimberley Tree Service is the only other tree service I will use in the future. I was amazed at his job. And as today... as I look at the work that he did, I think WTS was very well reasonable & professional.

When to trim

What pruning actually fixes

Pruning is not tidying. Done properly it takes weight off the limbs most likely to fail, opens the canopy so wind passes through it, and clears the things rubbing your roof.

  • Dead, cracked or hanging limbs over a house or driveway
  • Branches rubbing shingles or filling the gutters
  • Low limbs blocking vehicles, gates or ranch entrances
  • Heavy end-weight on long limbs that could fail in wind
  • Dense interior growth catching wind like a sail
  • Crossing and competing limbs on a young oak, including removing one of two codominant leaders before it becomes a split trunk at thirty years old
  • Deadwood in cedar, and low cedar limbs carrying fire up into the canopy

Cost

What tree trimming costs in Wimberley

Trimming is priced on the size of the canopy, how much is coming out of it, and how hard the tree is to get into and work from. A single limb over a driveway is a short visit. A full clearance and deadwood job on three mature live oaks over a house is a day.

You get the agreed scope and price in writing before anything starts. If we think a tree needs less work than you asked for, we will say so and quote the smaller job.

What good pruning actually looks like

There is a large gap between trimming and pruning, and most of the damage we see on Hill Country trees was done by someone who thought they were the same thing.

Cuts go at the branch collar, the slight swelling where a limb meets the trunk. Cut there and the tree can seal the wound over. Cut flush to the trunk, or leave a long stub, and it cannot, which leaves an entry point for decay that stays open for years.

Never more than about a quarter of the canopy in one visit on a mature tree. Leaves are how a tree feeds itself. Strip too many at once and it responds with a flush of weak, fast water sprouts that are more likely to fail than what you removed.

No topping, ever. Cutting the leaders off to shorten a tree does not make it safer. It creates a ring of poorly attached regrowth on top of a decaying stub, which is a genuinely dangerous tree in ten years time.

Reduce, do not just lift. Taking every low limb off and leaving the weight out at the ends is common and it is backwards. It raises the center of gravity and leaves long, heavy levers that fail in wind. Shortening the ends back to suitable growth points does far more for the tree.

What happens on the day

We climb rather than work from a bucket on most Hill Country properties, because the ground and the tree spacing rarely suit a lift. You will see rope work rather than spikes, since spikes wound a tree we are trying to keep. Brush is chipped as it comes down, and the area under the tree gets raked and blown before we leave.

How much of a tree can safely come off

The single most useful number in pruning: prune no more than 25% of the canopy in a year, and less than that on a tree already under drought stress. Leaves are how a tree feeds itself. Strip too many and it answers with weak, fast water sprouts that are more likely to fail than the wood you removed.

Size of cut matters as much as quantity. Avoid removing branches larger than four to six inches in diameter where there is any choice, because wounds that big on a mature tree close slowly and invite decay. Improper trimming can significantly decline the health of a tree, and the damage often does not show for years.

Cuts, tools and technique

Make clean cuts just outside the branch collar, the slight swelling where a limb meets the trunk. Cut there and the tree can seal over. Flush cuts remove the tissue that does the sealing and leave a wound open for years. Stubs rot back into the trunk.

A saw that has just been through diseased wood can carry it into the next cut, which is why ours are disinfected between trees. We clean saws between properties as standard.

Anything heavy comes off in three cuts: an undercut, a top cut further out to drop the weight, then the final cut at the collar. Without that sequence the falling limb tears bark down the trunk.

Young trees and structural pruning

Structural pruning can start two to three years after planting, and it is the cheapest tree work you will ever buy. Correcting a competing leader on a young oak takes minutes. Correcting the same defect at thirty years old means removing a large limb, or removing the tree.

Trimming near the house

Local terrain here is rocky limestone and steep slopes, so trees put out wide shallow roots and lean toward the light rather than standing straight. That is why so many Hill Country trees end up with long overextended limbs reaching over a roof.

Reducing the weight at the end of those limbs does more good than lifting the canopy. Raising the canopy while leaving all the weight out at the tips raises the center of gravity and leaves long levers that fail in wind. See tree removal if a limb has already failed.

What often goes with this job

Oaks are a special case and there are months of the year when they must not be cut at all, which is covered on the oak tree trimming page. If pruning is not going to save the tree, see tree removal. Ongoing canopy checks and condition reports come under tree health and maintenance, and the brush we take out can be chipped on site.

Questions

Tree trimming questions

Straight answers, including what the work actually costs.

What is a reasonable price for tree trimming in Texas?

It varies far more than people expect, because a single limb and a full canopy job on a mature oak are different orders of work. We price on the tree in front of us and give you the figure in writing.

What is the best month to trim trees in Texas?

For most species, the dormant months. Oaks we take year round, because what protects an oak is sealing the cut immediately and cleaning tools between trees rather than the month it is done in. See our oak tree trimming page for the detail.

How often should trees be trimmed?

Most mature oaks here want attention every three to five years. Trees over a roof or a driveway usually need looking at more often than that.

Do you top trees?

No. Topping ruins the structure of a tree and creates weak regrowth that fails later. If a canopy needs reducing we shorten limbs back to suitable growth points instead.

Will you clean up the branches?

Yes, always. Chipped on site or hauled away, whichever suits you.

The pruning standards we work to

These are not house rules. They come from Texas A&M Forest Service guidance and the City of Wimberley environmental stewardship recommendations, and they are what any competent crew in this area should be doing.

Sealing. Fresh cuts on oaks are sealed within minutes rather than at the end of the day, because an open wound is what draws the beetles that carry oak wilt. We do it on every oak cut, year round.

Afterwards. Debris from pruned or removed trees should be disposed of properly to prevent disease spread. On oaks we dispose of the brush properly. Fungal mats that can start new infections form on infected red oak material, so wood from an oak suspected of oak wilt is handled separately.

Who should do it. Large trees and dangerous limbs need someone who can read where the load runs in damaged wood and rig it down rather than drop it. For anything above head height or over a structure, that judgment is worth paying for. Ask whoever you call what experience they have with the kind of tree you have got.

What tree trimming costs in Wimberley, TX

Professional tree trimming in Wimberley, TX typically costs between $200 and $1,000 or more per tree. That is the local market range rather than our quote, and where a job lands inside it comes down to canopy size, how much is being removed, how hard the tree is to climb and work from, and what happens to the brush afterwards.

A single limb over a driveway sits at the bottom of that range. A full deadwood and clearance job on three mature live oaks over a house sits at the top of it, or above. Anything needing a crane or extended rigging is priced separately.

We give you the scope and price in writing after looking at the tree. Tree trimming services are available for both residential and commercial properties, and the estimate is free either way.

What to ask before you hire any tree service

Most of the difference between a good outcome and an expensive one is settled before anyone climbs. These are worth checking whoever you hire, including us.

Ask who is assessing the tree. Certified arborists can assess tree health and conditions, and on a borderline tree that judgment is the whole job. If the credential matters to you, ask directly whether the person quoting holds an ISA certification and ask for the number. Plenty of companies imply it without holding it, so it is a fair question to put to anyone. Santos is an ISA Certified Arborist and his number is TX-390690A.

Ask for the insurance certificate, and read it. General liability is what stands behind damage to your property if something goes wrong during the work. Ours is $1,000,000 general liability ($2,000,000 aggregate) through American Builders Insurance Company, and we send it before we start. Ask any company you call to send theirs.

Ask what equipment the job needs. Proper equipment is essential for removing trees in challenging locations, and professional-grade equipment is most of what separates a controlled job from a hopeful one. On a steep or tight Hill Country site the honest answer is sometimes that the job needs kit a particular crew does not own.

Get it in writing. A tree job needs a clear, written estimate detailing all services included: which trees, whether the stump is included, whether wood is hauled or left, whether brush is chipped on site, and the job site clean-up standard.

Check reviews and references. Reviews and references are important for choosing a reliable tree service, and satisfied customers in a place this size are easy to check. Ask for addresses of recent jobs nearby.

Ask about oak wilt protocol. Texas Hill Country tree services follow oak wilt prevention protocols, or they should. That means sealing oak cuts promptly, cleaning saws between properties, and disposing of oak debris properly. Material from an oak suspected of oak wilt is handled separately, because fungal mats form on infected red oak wood.

Tree care services that often come with the job

Very few properties need only one thing done, and handling them on one visit costs less than bringing a crew back.

Chipping and mulching. Chipping reduces tree debris into manageable mulch on site and converts branches into usable mulch in minutes, and chipping services help clear land for new projects without a convoy of trucks. Chipped material can be reused as mulch for landscaping, mulching improves soil health and moisture retention, which on thin soil over limestone matters more than fertiliser does, and mulch can suppress weed growth in landscaped areas. Two to four inches over the root zone, kept three to six inches clear of the trunk.

Cedar management. Cedar management includes removing dead cedar trees and thinning dense stands, and cedar clearing promotes proper growth in landscapes and of surrounding vegetation by taking the competition for water off your oaks. Cedar management helps maintain healthy landscapes in Texas, is essential for site preparation in construction and for fence lines, and cedar management services are available for residential and commercial properties.

Land clearing. Land clearing removes brush, overgrowth and debris efficiently and can create more usable outdoor spaces on a property that has closed in. It prepares sites for construction projects, driveways and septic fields, can involve cedar removal and site preparation, and involves clearing out unwanted vegetation rather than scraping a slope bare. Land clearing services are available for both residential and commercial properties.

Emergency and storm work. Emergency tree services respond quickly to storm damage and are essential for safety after severe weather, and storm damage cleanup includes clearing fallen trees and branches. Dead and hazardous trees can pose risks to people and property, and removing them can reduce those risks. Emergency tree services are available for residential and commercial properties, and professional-grade equipment is used for emergency tree removal.

Removals. Tree removal is necessary for diseased or storm-damaged trees and is essential for property safety and management, and trees in the wrong location may require removal for safety. Professional tree removal uses equipment for safe extraction where the drop zone is tight. Tree removal processes typically involve on-site assessments and cleanup rather than a price over the phone, and specific precautions are necessary for dealing with oak wilt during tree removal.

Tree Trimming Wimberley TX

Wimberley Tree Service is a locally owned tree service company, owner operated, and the same small team does the work on every job. We are based in Wimberley TX and cover Hays County and the surrounding areas, including Dripping Springs, Driftwood, San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Blanco, Bee Cave and Austin, with nearby areas across Comal and Blanco counties served on the same terms.

We work for homeowners, ranch and acreage owners, builders, clients and property managers, on both residential and commercial properties. Whether it is one dead tree in a back yard, dead limbs and branches over a driveway, or a whole fence line that has disappeared into cedar, the process is the same: we come out, look at it, and give you a written price that fits the unique needs of the property.

Every estimate is a free estimate, and we will tell you when we can get out to look. Scheduling the work itself is a separate thing: we run about a month booked out, and we will give you a real date rather than a hopeful one. Emergencies are the exception and are fitted in as soon as the crew can get there. We are $1M liability insured, we take great care to leave the job site clean, and we will tell you when a tree does not need the work you asked about.

A four person crew, and years of Hill Country tree work. The business has run under this name since April 2025. Orlyn and Matt climb, Aurelio works the ground, and Santos comes out on the jobs that need him. That is who turns up: the same small crew every time, not a subcontractor you have never met. Our minimum charge for a job is $500.

You get options, not one number. Every estimate is itemised and normally comes with three to five ways to approach the job, priced separately, so you can see what each part costs and choose the scope yourself. Most people find one of the middle options is the job they actually wanted. We work in English and Spanish.

Want the trees looked at?
